Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray suddenly gave indications of the changing equations between him and the BJP by targeting BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi publicly at Nashik in Maharashtra. Raj suggested that Modi should resign as Gujarat Chief Minister and think on the national scale if he wants people to believe that he can lead the country.
“Modi should have given up the Chief Minister’s position the day he became the principal opposition party’s Prime Ministerial candidate. He is seen all the time referring to the work done in Gujarat but is not talking about other states. In his recent rally in Mumbai, he was seen talking only about Gujarat and Sardar Patel’s statue. In Maharashtra, he should have talked about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue. If he wants people to believe that he can lead the country, he should grow out of Gujarat,” Raj said.
The MNS is holding a three-day convention in Nashik to discuss the preparations for Lok Sabha polls. Raj Thackeray reached Nashik on Thursday morning. Raj targeted the BJP and the Aam Aadami Party at a press conference he addressed before the convention in Nashik.
“The results of the recent Delhi assembly polls are a good lesson for all political parties, including the BJP. People have proved that they can throw anybody out and they want development. But AAP has just got the benefit of being fresh. They are too publicity hungry and too much in a hurry to exhibit what they are doing,” alleged Raj.
Raj’s comments about Narendra Modi were unexpected and surprising for most because just till his last public appearance, Raj kept saying that he was impressed by Narendra Modi’s work in Gujarat and treated Modi like his roll-model. At several functions in Mumbai Raj openly praised Modi and during the 2012 municipal election campaign in Mumbai, Raj publicly said that he would follow in Modi’s footsteps if he got power in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
The BJP reacted sharply at Raj Thackeray’s comments made at the Nashik convention. BJP state president Devendra Phadanvis said, “Many people don’t know how to react to the rapidly rising popularity of Narendra Modi. Raj seems to be one of them. Modi does not need anybody’s advise on whether he should stay in the CM’s position. The people of Gujarat have repeatedly elected him”.
