Facing allegations of sexual harassment of a law intern, former Supreme Court judge Asok Ganguly met West Bengal governor M K Narayanan amid indications that he had submitted his resignation as the state’s Human Rights Commission chairperson.
The meeting came a day after former attorney general Soli Sorabjee said he had received a letter from Ganguly “seriously contemplating resignation”. Neither the retired judge nor Raj Bhavan denied he had resigned.
Sorabjee said Ganguly had been under pressure since the allegation surfaced and he was subjected to an SC probe. “He has finally resigned. Better late than never,” he said on Monday. Additional solicitor general Indira Jaising, who had demanded strong action against the former judge, also welcomed his resignation even as she wondered why he hadn’t quit earlier.
The resignation was expected, specially after the Union Cabinet on January 2 gave its nod for a presidential reference to Supreme Court to probe the charge against Ganguly.
