Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the J Jayalalithaa government’s decision to set free LTTE terrorists convicted for the conspiracy to kill former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Reacting to the controversial announcement of the Tamil Nadu CM, BJP leader Arun Jaitley said, “The degree of compassion that different institutions have shown towards the killers of a former prime minister is disappointing.”
Jaitley further said, “I am, in fact, quite distressed by the development.”
The BJP leader’s reference to “institutions” was interpreted in the context of Supreme Court’s judgment to commute the death sentence of three convicted for Rajiv’s assassination on the ground of inordinate delay in the execution of capital punishment.
Significantly, BJP’s stand was almost identical to Congress’s at a time when the two parties have been holding divergent views on a range of issues.
