Sindhudurg will have a full-fledged commercial airport by the year-end.
Maharashtra government sources said that while the terminal building and apron are ready, the runway and taxiway are under construction. The airport will have a 3,450-metre runway and a 668-metre taxiway. The terminal building is spread over 90,000 sq feet.
“Difficulty in obtaining sand and laterite stone is delaying the project,” said a source.
The airport is seen as an important piece of infrastructure to lure tourists to the coastal district. Sindhudurg, which shares boundary with neighbouring Goa, is the only district declared a tourist destination.
“Goa’s Dabolim airport is a naval airport and civil operations are not allowed after 8 pm. At Sindhudurg there will be no restrictions and it has been built to cater to jet engines,” said a Maharashtra industries department official.
With the moratorium on mining in the district being lifted, officials said, several infrastructure projects will get an impetus in the state.
Maharashtra has been planning projects such as the sea-world marine project at Tondwali, a scuba-diving training programme at Tarkarli and a tourist centre at Oros. Narayan Rane, the Sindhudurg guardian minister, has announced the setting up of an F1 race track and a golf course at Sawantwadi in the district.
