India returned to the Olympic fold after the International Olympic Committee revoked the suspension of the country’s Olympic body, Indian Olympic Association, in a “historic” decision. This ended a 14-month exile which saw Indian athletes participate in events under the IOC flag, and not the Indian flag.
The announcement came after an ad-hoc meeting of IOC’s executive board in Sochi was convinced that the elections to the IOA, which took place on Sunday, were held in “full respect of the recently passed NOC constitution, which complies with all IOC requirements”.
It is for the first time in Olympic history that the suspension of a National Olympic Committee has been lifted during an Olympic Games. An IOC official said that the lifting of suspension came with immediate effect.
