Nod for Green India Mission

After dithering for over two years, the government has finally approved the much awaited ‘Green India Mission’ to increase forest cover in the country and sanctioned Rs.13,000 crore for this purpose.
The money will be spent by involving locals. It will, therefore, create jobs while enhancing carbon sinks through large scale afforestation. The approval came from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs which also cleared the proposal to converge the mission with MGNREGA and the compensatory afforestation fund. This will also generate employment in areas where authorities plan to increase forest cover.
