After delaying the decision for almost four years, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finally made headway towards metered water supply in the city. For this, the civic body has appointed a consultant to prepare a detailed project plan for implementation of a 24x7 water supply system in the city for a cost of Rs.23.41 crore.
The consultant will prepare a roadmap for implementation of the system throughout the city and suggest tarrifs. Most of the water distribution system under the 24x7 supply will be operated via SCADA. The city has around 11,11,717 residential, 33,352 commercial and 2,039 public tap water connections.
Earlier, the civic body was planning to introduce the system in just two areas in the city — Jodhpurgam and SP stadium. The civic body has got the nod for 24x7 water supply. The process has been put on the fast track, as the Union urban development department has set a deadline of March 2014. AMC had readied 11 projects worth Rs.1,550 crore for JnNURM funding.
AMC rejected the idea of introducing manual water meters earlier and instead chose a system that is radio transmitter based and will save costs both for the civic body and residents. Civic officials say the 24x7 metered water supply will help manage consumption and check misuse and pilferage. The cost of an automated meter has been is estimated to be around Rs.5,000, against Rs.1,500-2,000 for a manual meter. This excludes installation charges. At present, many residential societies depend on bores and surface water for round-the-clock water supply. AMC plans to put an end to use of bore wells by the end of this year.
