A tweet by Rajnath Singh seeking votes for a BJP government momentarily generated ripples of excitement.
“Times for Change, Time for BJP. Abki Baar, Bhajapa Sarkar”, Rajnath tweeted at 12.47 pm. While this read like a standard appeal for votes, it became the subject of commentary with some stressing that Rajnath had sought support for a BJP government without specifically spelling out that it would be led by Narendra Modi.
With suggestions furiously doing the rounds that it marked a deviation from the party’s stand to form the government under Modi, the BJP president was constrained to tweet again, this time seeking support specifically for a Modi-led dispensation at the Centre. “Time for Change, Time for BJP. Bahut hui Mahangai Ki Maar, Abki Baar Modi Sarkar (a government under Modi is necessary to tackle inflation),” said the fresh tweet at 1.20 pm, nearly half an hour after the earlier tweet.
Sources in the party cautioned against “over-interpreting” what they called innocuous tweets. “We all use Modi government and BJP government alternatively,” said a senior source who is a close supporter of Modi.
Controversial chief of right wing outfit Sri Ram Sene, Pramod Muthalik, claimed it was Congress' “conspiracy” that had stalled his entry into BJP, which quashed his party membership within hours after opposition from within and severe flak from other parties.
Muthalik, who is facing some 45 cases, including those relating to promoting enmity between two communities, was welcomed into the party fold on Sunday and hours later dumped following severe flak from within the BJP and opposition parties, including Congress.
A red-faced BJP central leadership had set aside the membership of Muthalik, linked with the attack by his outfit activists in a Mangalore pub in 2009 that had sparked national outrage, as the state leaders' move backfired.
In spite of the “unfortunate development”, Muthalik said Ram Sene will work toward strengthening BJP from outside.
