President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday gave his assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill, 2014, apart from signing the ordinance promulgating central rule in the state.
The UPA government’s move to clamp central rule in AP and keeping the assembly in suspended animation has triggered speculation that it is lobbying with the Election Commission to extend the term of the House by six months.
The gazette notification for the two new states is likely to be issued next week. Union minister Jairam Ramesh had indicated there would be a minimum of three months gap between the gazette notification and the appointed date, when Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh will officially come into being.
