Within hours of making an announcement that the government has planned to plant about 200 crore saplings along National Highways, road transport and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari cleared the proposal to implement the scheme under the rural job guarantee scheme and to protect the environment.
Gadkari, who holds the additional charge of the rural development ministry , the nodal agency for MNREGA, took the decision claiming it would provide employment to jobless youth. Earlier in the day , the minister said the plantation will be drive would be linked to MGNREGA.
Sources said the proposal was mooted recently in the road transport ministry to increase green cover along the NHs. “The synergy between the two ministries could happen since the minister hold charges of both highways and rural development. Major stretches of NHs pass through the villages and rural areas. So, there is a huge scope of engaging the locals in plantation and maintaining them,“ said a government officer. The synergy is crucial to implement the scheme since the vacant stretches along the highways are owned by NHAI and road transport ministry . Under MNREGA, the focus activities allowed include forestation and water conservation.
As per the scheme, once the plantation is over, unemployed youth can be entrusted with the task of maintaining it.
