India ratifies IAEA protocol

In a move meant to signal responsible use of nuclear power, India has ratified the additional protocol it had committed to under the India-US civil nuclear agreement allowing greater oversight over its civilian atomic facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Agencies reported on Sunday that the additional protocol was signed last week.
The move is significant also because it indicates BJP’s approval of the civil nuclear cooperation agreement between India and the US, described by former PM Manmohan Singh as his most significant achievement during his 10-year tenure.
The ratification won’t just come as a reassurance to the US over India’s commitment to the agreement ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington in September, but is also likely to pave the way for India’s membership of NSG. IAEA had in March 2009 approved an additional protocol to India’s safeguards agreement consequent to a pact reached with the agency the previous year to place its civilian nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.
