The Maharashtra government is still sitting on scams involving losses of around Rs.4,500 crore of public money , the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed. The CAG has pointed out that state departments had failed to explain and audit queries/observations involving the around Rs.4,500 crore-loss of the public exchequer.
According to the CAG, by June 2013, there were 4,760 outstanding inspection reports and around 10,510 audit observations that the state had not yet answered. Of these, most of the reports involving around Rs.2,000 crore belonged to the revenue and forest, and energy departments.
Though the government has complied with a few audit queries made during 2001 and 2012 and has recovered Rs.1,140 crore against the total recoverable amount of Rs.3,704 crore, there is still a Rs.2,500-crore loss that is yet to be recovered .
