Karnataka chief minister K. Siddaramaiah on Monday handed over the investigation into IAS officer D K Ravi's mysterious death to the CBI. The move follows the intervention of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in favour of widespread demands for the agency's involvement, after the police dismissed the bureaucrat's death by hanging as a suicide.
“I'm referring the case to the CBI in deference to public emotion and to address the concerns of Ravi's parents. The opposition used the offi cer's death and even brought to Vidhana Soudha his aged parents who are ignorant of what CBI or CID means,“ the CM said in the assembly .
According to sources, as late as Monday morning, the option of setting up a legislature panel to investigate the death was discussed at a cabinet meeting, but most ministers wanted the government to end the controversy by going in for a CBI probe. CBI sources said late on Monday that they hadn't been notified about the case. The state government has to approach the home ministry , after which the CBI will be notified.
