Somewhere in Ranaghat....

Witnesses to the Ranaghat assault have given CID chilling details of how the robbers sang songs, goofed around, had food from the fridge and then dragged away the 71-year-old nun to rape her. What's more, she may have been attacked for trying to save another sister.
A senior nun has told investigators that the gang divided into three groups. While one kept watch on the sisters' residential section, another parked itself on the playground and the rest barged into the office.
The sister has said how the robbers looked “completely relaxed“, chatted casually among themselves, laughed and some even made calls on cellphones. They took banana and bread from the fridge, ate them at leisure, sang songs and even played games for a while.
Their menace was cloaked in a casual approach. They began by desecrating the chapel, tearing off the tabernacle and holy beads. Then, they attacked the sisters sleeping on the first floor.
When one of the sisters begged for mercy , the attackers got even more violent. The elderly nun bravely tried to resist them, after which the gang turned on her. They dragged her to another room and raped her, say the sisters.
CID believes it was a gang of hardened criminals, not from Ranaghat. One of the senior sisters said the robbers spoke Bengali with an accent that's heard in the border areas. One of them in a red monkey cap was called the “boss“.
A CID team is leaving for Uttar Pradesh while BSF has been alerted to prevent any escape to Bangladesh. Police picked up two suspects from Dhanekhali on Sunday night. Some nuns told police that one of them resembled an attacker but both turned out to have strong alibis and were let off.
Nadia SP Arnab Ghosh said, “We detained some persons of suspicious character and with facial relevance to those caught on the CCTV footage. We are checking their background as well as their activities on that night.“ The DGP said tips are coming in response to the Rs 1 lakh reward.

The Centre has asked the Bengal government for an action-taken-report on the nun rape case within 48 hours. The horrific crime was raised in Parliament, prompting minister of state for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to demand that the state government take swift action to book the culprits.
