PMRDA still in limbo

Five months after Maharashtra chief minister promised to clear all hurdles in the way of making the Pune Metropolitan Development Authority (PMRDA) functional, the state government has failed to take any concrete steps to bring about comprehensive development of Pune district.
Fadnavis had said in November that the state will emulate the Mumbai model in Pune wherein a centralized authority , i. e. the PMRDA, will plan and execute integrated development for the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) by raising funds. Even the eight city MLAs (all from BJP) had assured that they will pursue the matter with the CM.
The state had announced formation of the PMRDA in 1997 and a resolution was passed in the state assembly in 1999. The Metropolitan Planning Committee (MPC), the planning body , is already in place. Elections to the 30-member MPC were held in April 2008. However, in the absence of basic infrastructure, such as office space, the elected MPC members were not able to do much and the committee's term ended without any output. The PMRDA will plan and execute development for the PMR, which is spread over 1,340 sq km, comprising Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, the three cantonments of Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road, and close to 100 other census towns and villages.
