Two days after a mob broke into a jail in Dimapur and lynched an Assamese trader accused of raping a Naga woman, there was unrest in parts of Assam and Nagaland. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi said the Centre should nail those responsible for the security lapse and demanded that Nagaland clarify reports rejecting the rape allegations.
Family members of the victim, Farid Khan, denied the charges and said the rape survivor, a cousin of Khan's wife, had demanded money to drop the case.
Nagaland deployed paramilitary forces to protect non-Naga communities while the Assam government alerted districts authorities to prevent a backlash against Nagas in the state.
