Bihar CM Nitish Kumar won a trust vote in the state assembly through lobby division. He got 140 votes while 87 members of opposition BJP walked out.
Former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi remained absent, but 11 JD(U) MLAs believed to be his supporters, voted for Nitish as a whip was issued violating which would have disqualified them.
Manjhi, who quit as CM on February 20 after month-long bitter rivalry with Nitish, questioned the legality of the whip even after the JD (U) had declared him an `unattached' member.
Besides 109 of the 110 JD (U) MLAs in the 243-member assembly with an effective strength of 233, 24 of RJD and 5 MLAs of Congress voted for Nitish. He got votes of one CPI and one independent MLA. Four other independent MLAs abstained.
Speaking for the motion, Nitish said the fight now is not between Hindus and Muslims but between orthodox and liberal Hindus.
