Work on the second phase of the monorail--Wadala to Jacob Circle--has just inched a little closer. The MMRDA has received an “in principle“ approval to launch a girder at Currey Road railway station, sources said. This approval paves the way for the final nod which is expected to be received from the Commissioner of Road Safety of the railways, according to the sources.
“Now, we are all set to complete the second phase of the Monorail, which has been delayed due to clearances,“ said a source in MMRDA. “The project will tentatively be completed by the end of the year.“
The second phase is along a 10.24-km stretch between Wadala and Jacob Circle and the deadline now is set as December 2015.
Earlier this week, MMRDA had received the go-ahead from the authorities to launch the girder above the railway tracks at Wadala. In February last year, the first phase of the Monorail project-Wadala to Chembur--was launched.
An expert in transport-related issues said that the passenger response to the Mono rail will be good only when its second phase is completed.“The first phase of the Monorail serves a limited number of commuters, mainly local residents. Office-goers will use the service only when the second phase is operational. This will also reduce the burden on the suburban train network,“ said this expert. “It will help citizens travel from the eastern suburbs up to south Mumbai,“ said this expert.
