The government of Telangana is likely to go for global bidding for the drinking water grid being planned with an estimated cost of Rs.27,000 crore. The project with 24 sub-grids is aimed at ensuring safe drinking water to the entire population of the State and will be completed in the next four years.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao held a review meeting on the drinking water grid in Secretariat with the officials of rural water supply, irrigation, public health, industries and finance departments. Stating that the project would create a world record of sorts, the Chief Minister said the total length of pipelines to be laid as part of it would be about four times the circumference of the earth. In all, 1,26,036 km of pipelines would be laid.
After examining maps, contours, water resources and geographical conditions with the help of Google Earth, the Chief Minister directed the officials to estimate the requirement of water for drinking needs in urban/rural areas and industries till year 2050. The officials proposed to the Chief Minister that about Rs.317 crore would be required for preparing a detailed project report, equipment purchase and staffing.
