Nilambur teak — famous for its size, superior colour and durability — has received geographical indication tag. The Kerala Agricultural University has received a communication in this regard from GI Registry, Chennai.
Prof C R Elsy of IPR cell, KAU said it is for the first time that a forest produce is getting GI tag across the globe. “It will help us protect Nilambur teak. There are about 10,000 people dependent on it to make a living, and the tag will fetch them good revenue as it will block the sale of fake products,” Abdullakutty of Nilambur Teak Heritage Society said.
