Pune: Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro line gets state nod

The Maharashtra state cabinet gave its nod to the 23.3 km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line, which will be built at a cost of Rs.8,313 crore and executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

“The work for the line will be carried out in phases. The first phase between Hinjewadi to Balewadi will be completed by April 2019 and the second phase between Balewadi to Shivajinagar will be completed by 2021,” PMRDA commissioner Kiran Gitte told

The Metro line will be executed under the Public Private Partnership model. “The bidder for the project will be finalized by April this year. If everything goes as per the plan, the work should commence by June,” PMRDA officials said.

PMRDA has shortlisted three companies that could bid for the project, including Tata Realty Siemens, IRB in consortium with Chinese and Malaysian companies and ILFS. “The final bid is expected to be cleared by March or April,” Gitte said.

The successful bidder will have to bring in 60% funding for the project, including 30% in equity and 70% in debt. The Union government had earlier agreed in principle to provide 20% viability gap funding for the same line.

Gitte said the project will be implemented according to the Union government’s new Metro policy. “All the stations will be equipped with the latest technology, amenities and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The entire Metro is expected to be monitored by automated technologies,” he added.

The officials said the Metro will ply through Hinjewadi, Wakad, Balewadi, Pune University and Shivajinagar. At Shivajinagar junction, it would align with the other two Metro lines at civil court junction, thus, enabling the passengers to travel via all the three lines through a single ticket.
