Travelling short distances in Thane without leaving a carbon footprint is now possible. The Thane Municipal Corporation, in a public-private partnership, flagged off the Thane Public Bicycle Sharing facility.
Under the scheme, which will be operational from next week, TMC will offer 500 cycles on rent for Rs.10/hour at 50 designated stands. The bikes, each costing Rs.5,500, will be tracked via GPS installed by the contractor, said a civic official, adding that any damage to the bike or the user would be recovered through group insurance.
To avail the facility, citizens will have to get a smart card with a minimum recharge of Rs.250. To rent a bicycle, the user will have to to flash the card in front of the reader installed at the stand to unlock a bicycle and the rent amount will be deducted. The process to return the bicycle is the same. Bicycles for rent can also be booked through a mobile app, Ilovecycling, that will give updates on routes travelled each day and calories burnt in one trip.
While TMC will provide space for the cycle stands, the contractor will handle the operations for 10 years and then hand it over to the civic body.
