Neginhal, tree man of India, dies at 92

Renowned wildlife specialist, author and photographer Sethuram Gopalrao Neginhal died of Covid-19 at KIMS Hospital and Research Centre early Sunday. He was 92.

Regarded as one of the country’s best foresters, Neginhal was instrumental in setting up the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in 1973 and greening Bengaluru, Delhi and other cities.

“There was stiff competition among states when sanctuaries were being converted into tiger reserves under the hugely successful Project Tiger of 1973.

“Bandipur was selected because of Neginhal’s tireless efforts and excellent management as the park director,” said Sanjai Mohan, principal chief conservator of forest and head of the forest force.
