Nashik-Pune rail project

The Union government has allocated Rs.225 crore for the ambitious Nashik-Pune rail track project for the financial year 2017-18. The funds would be used for preliminary work like acquiring land for the 265 km long project. The entire cost of the project has been pegged at Rs.2,424 crore.

The route involves Nashik Road, Sinnar (Nashik), Sangamner (Ahmednagar), Junnar (Pune) before reaching Pune. It includes the existing Pune to Begadewadi route and laying of new route through Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Sangamner, Sinnar and Nashik, running parallel to the Nashik-Pune national highway.

Currently, rail connectivity between Pune and Nashik is via Panvel and takes around seven to eight hours. The new rail link will reduce this time. This project was sanctioned with a provision of Rs.1 crore in the Railway Budget of 2015-16.

The Railway had sanctioned the project considering 50% contribution in infrastructure by the state government.
