A tiger crossing a road near Saighata—a stretch 105km from Nagpur once used by the now missing beloved tiger Jai and often frequented by sub-adult tigers—left motorists stunned on Wednesday. It also put into focus the need to expedite construction of mitigation structures.
Forest officials had in 2018 given permission to PWD to upgrade the road. In 2020, the NGT took suo motu cognisance of a 2018 report and ordered construction, within three years, of underpasses on seven stretches in the Tadoba landscape, but the State Board for Wildlife and the National Board for Wildlife are yet to clear the proposal for Saighata. SWBL member Bandu Dhotre said the issue has not even been brought up in a meeting.
