The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority said tenders for the Pune-Mumbai hyperloop test track of 11.4 km from Gahunje to Ozarde will be floated within two-three months to speed up the project.
Following a meeting in Mumbai with the state chief secretary and other senior officials, PMRDA officials said work would commence on the test track and the tests for safety and security would be done.
The PMRDA recently submitted the feasibility report of the hyperloop corridor to IIT-Bombay to finalize the connecting point in Mumbai.
The Mumbai-Pune hyperloop project was declared a public infrastructure project in November last year. Hyperloop is a high-speed mode of transport in tubes and aims at reducing the Mumbai-Pune travel time from four hours to 25 minutes.
The first step will be to construct the 11.4 km demonstration track from Gahunje to Ozarde. The plan also entails connectivity to Navi Mumbai and Bandra Kurla Complex.
The government has given the go-ahead to the PMRDA to award the project wok using the Swiss Challenge Method. The method will allow other private companies working on innovative technologies an opportunity to get involved in the project. If any new player comes forward and offers 10% betterment, it will get the contract.
In December 2018, district guardian minister Girish Bapat had said hyperloop was just a “test project” and could not be implemented under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan the PMRDA has made for the next 20 years.
