Gau Mata Important Element of India’s Tradition & Culture: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the significance his government attaches to cow protection, stating that the animal is an important part of India’s tradition and culture and the Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog announced in the interim budget, with an allocation of ₹500 crore, will contribute towards its conservation and development.

Speaking at a programme in Vrindavan, Modi said his government has taken several steps to improve health of cows and maintained that the animal is a vital element of the rural economy. “We cannot repay the debt of cow’s (gau mata) milk. Gau mata is an important element of India’s tradition and culture.”

He lauded the Rashtriya Gokul Mission aimed at cow protection. “Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog is being set up for conservation, protection and development of cows with an allocation of₹500 crore,” Modi said.

He also highlighted the efforts being made in the field of animal husbandry and said a credit of ₹3 lakh under Kisan Credit Card has been extended to farmers. Kisan Yojana aimed at farmer welfare will benefit farmers of Uttar Pradesh the most as most of them have landholdings less than five acres, Modi said.

The PM was speaking at a programme organised by Akshaya Patra Foundation to serve the third billionth meal to underprivileged children. The NGO works closely with the HRD ministry to serve midday meals to poor children.
