Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked India for helping Israel reject the request by a Palestinian group, declared a terrorist organisation by Israel, that it be granted an observer status at the UN. India had voted in favour of Israel in the UN Economic and Social Council to deny the NGO ‘Shahed’ the observer status, after Israel said the organisation did not disclose its ties with Hamas. This is probably the first time India has voted in favour of Israel at the UN. “Thank you @NarendraModi, thank you India... for standing with Israel at the UN,’’ tweeted Netanyahu, almost a week after the June 6 vote. Israel’s motion was approved with 28 members in favour and 14 against.
